Indian politicians fear the USS NImitz

The mighty 90,000 tonne aircraft carrier USS Nimitz will be docking at the Southern Indian city of Chennai early next month as part of a joint defense exercise. Following the news local politicians made a huge outcry fearing that the Nimitz might be carrying nuclear weapons and also because they thought that radiation from the 23 storey tall ship's nuclear reactor might affect the locals. The Nimitz was given clearance after the defense department confirmed that it was not carrying any nuclear weapons. Even after this a few nuclear scientists had to explain the politicians that docking a nuclear powered vessel will affect the local populations.

Active Inc develops See-through LCD screen

Active Inc., a Tokyo based company that makes optical components has developed a new "composite LCD display" that is see-through. From the above picture it looks quite transparent like the stain-glass paintings we see at medieval churches, but much is yet to be revealed. The R&D of the company has been testing the use of liquid crystal optical film as a substitute for traditional LCD backlights; thus developing a screen that you can see-through the other side when the screen is powered on.

Always-On Millipod Micro Tripod

A slim and light P&S camera is great for slipping in your pocket and taking wherever you go but their compact size does have its disadvantages. That thin form factor makes propping them up for self-portraits or low-light shots very difficult. Sega Japan has announced the Mio a robotic dog. Armed with futuristic looks and touch sensors on the back, jaw and the head it responds immediately to touch. Its big LED stuffed eyes tell you if Mio is happy or sad. When hungry you have to feed it with the plastic bone, it responds to sound too. Release date and pricing of the Sega Mio is not known for now but the company hopes to sell 100,00 units by year end.

Microsoft launches $500 PC in India

Microsoft has partnered with AMD and launched another low cost PC in India. Beginning next month, Microsoft and its partners plan to start selling the IQ PC through computer retailers, bookshops and other stores in Bangalore and Pune, with plans to sell it throughout the country by November. Made by Zenith Computers the computers are built on AMD platform and are aimed at students from Kindergarten to 12th grade. Priced at 21,000 Indian Rupees ($ 500) the PC's will be preloaded with Windows Vista Basic, Works 2007, Student 2007 and third party software which includes exam preparation, homework help and English-language learning programs.

Sony transforms its office into a giant aquariam

If you happen to be in Tokyo till 31st August be sure to visit Sony's headquarters in the posh Ginza district. Sony has transformed the eight floor into a virtual theatre where Sony's SRX-R110 digital projector projects a 200 inch lifelike image. Showcased is recording made of the world famous Okinawa aquarium using Sony's HDC-F950 hi-def camera. And yes entry is free.

Nurian X10 dictionary with dual LCD

First we had laptops with dual LCD's and now is the turn of dictionaries. Nurian a Korean company showed off the X10 an electronic dictionary which has a external OLED display and a 4.1 inch 320 X 240 internal touchscreen display. The external display is for audio playback as you can view the time, name of song, FM channel without opening the dictionary. The X10 has English, Japanese, Chinese and Korean dictionary with an improved Google styled search engine. With support for XVid codec it can playback majority of video and audio formats. Other features include voice recorder, radio, image/text viewer and electronic scheduler. The 1600mAh battery has enough juice for 14 hours of dictionary, 11 hours for mp3 and 5 hours for video.

Sony does not believe in mine is bigger than yours

Sony has officially backed out from the LCD TV size game, Ryoji Chubachi, president and electronics CEO of Sony said the company has no plan to launch 100-inch-and-larger LCD TVs in the future. The largest LCD TV from Sony is the 72 inch Bravia, however the company has demonstrated a 84 inch Bravia prototype recently. Too bad Sony as Panasonic has already starting selling its 103 inch PDP-TV, Sharp had showed off the world's largest PDP-TV at 108 inches in CES this year, LG's $150k 100 inch LCD TV will go on sale soon and JVC will start taking orders for the world's largest rear projection TV at 110 inches in Japan from July.

Trey Chair - Transform And Sit!

While the Trey chair website tries to portray it as the office chair of a thousand uses (particularly in this photo gallery) in reality it only has two. The first is just like a normal office chair with all the features we’ve come to expect like built-in height adjustment and seat tilt. The second is where all the ‘innovation’ comes in. The seat portion of the Trey chair can be lifted off and used as a low to the ground rocker seat while the bottom part of the chair can then be used as a foot stool, or small desk.
It’s really not as impressive a feat as the website makes it out to be but I can still see it being handy in a dorm or small apartment setting where space is at a premium. Also until the popularity dies off again you can make that Transformer sound effect every time you reconfigure the chair, so it’s got that goin’ for it… which is nice.

Teac Japan has announced the CD-X10i a plain 2.1 channel CD system with an iPod dock. The super flat NXT speakers deliver an output of 5W x 2 channels, the sub-woofer has a 4 inch cone delivering 15 watts. The CD is played in an upright position same like those old Nakamichi jukeboxes at the music store. It has a FM tuner, sleep timer and an alarm clock. The main unit measures 160×86×226mm and weighs 1kg.

At the SEK 2007 LG showcased the LG-SB630 popularly known as Shine Slide TV phone. The 14mm thick phone packs in a T-DMB tuner so you can watch live digital TV on its 2.2 inch QVGA screen. The phone has 1GB of internal memory for recording TV programs in case you have to rush for a meeting. It has a RAZR styled laser etched keypad and can playback a variety of media files. The Shine slide TV phone weighs in at 123 grams and will be available in Korea only.

These pencil carvings are created by Mizuta Tasogara and Kato Jado. The delicate woodwork is much harder than it looks, pattern carves has to be made without making any miscut on the naked lead inside. Microsoft announced today the Microsoft Surface which is the first commercially available surface computer from the company that turns an ordinary tabletop into a vibrant interactive surface. The 30 inch display allows intuitive user interface without a traditional mouse or keyboard and works using touch screen. This will soon be more easily available in restaurants, hotels, retail establishments and public entertainment venues and Microsoft Surface will change the experience the way people shop, dine and entertain. The price will range between $5000 to $10000 each but Microsoft aims to bring prices down to consumer levels in three to five years time. At this time a group of tiger cubs made friends with newborn chicks in the Zhejiang Zoo in Taizhou city of China. The tigers initially shy away nervously from the chick but then made friends and played together. Well I'm sure it won't be long that their animal instinct takes over them when they get a little bit hungry or decided to play rough.
