The American insurance industry conducted side-impact crash tests of luxury sedans and from the whole lot the 2008 BMW 5 Series had the worst performance record. The Acura RL, Kia Amanti and Volvo S80 all earned the highest safety rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The Cadillac STS and Mercedes E-Class earned the second-highest rating. The tests were designed to reveal what would happen if a truck or sport utility vehicle struck the side of the sedan at 31 mph, the speed of a serious crash. Side-impact crashes killed around 9,000 people on U.S. roads in 2005 and are the most common type of fatal crash after a frontal crash, the institute said.

The external display is for audio playback as you can view the time, name of song, FM channel without opening the dictionary. The X10 has English, Japanese, Chinese and Korean dictionary with an improved Google styled search engine. With support for XVid codec it can playback majority of video and audio formats. While the Trey chair website tries to portray it as the office chair of a thousand uses (particularly in this photo gallery) in reality it only has two. The first is just like a normal office chair with all the features we’ve come to expect like built-in height adjustment and seat tilt. The second is where all the ‘innovation’ comes in. The seat portion of the Trey chair can be lifted off and used as a low to the ground rocker seat while the bottom part of the chair can then be used as a foot stool, or small desk.
It’s really not as impressive a feat as the website makes it out to be but I can still see it being handy in a dorm or small apartment setting where space is at a premium. Also until the popularity dies off again you can make that Transformer sound effect every time you reconfigure the chair, so it’s got that goin’ for it… which is nice.

A point and shoot digital camera is fine for catching one or two of baby’s first steps, but what if you really wanted to preserve that moment? This dilemma has to be the reason Vision Research created the Phantom Miro 3. It’s roughly the size of a high-end P&S digital camera but what sets the Miro 3 apart is its ability to shoot at 1,000 fps at a resolution of 800×600. Just imagine the joy of friends and family while they get to watch you step through thousands of frames of your kid stumbling around during that 3 hour slideshow.
But what’s that? You don’t think 1,000 fps is sufficient? Well you’ll be glad to know that dropping the resolution down to 512×512 will allow you to shoot at 2,200 fps. Still not good enough? Well at 32×32 the camera should be able to achieve frame rates greater than 95,000 fps. Who can understand it better then Swiss automotive design house Rinspeed who has recently announced a new initiative to design airplane cabins with light displays on the walls. Rinspeed calls its cabin design Sensosphere. It relies on a computer-controlled electroluminescent material lining the cabin walls for the displays. Based on emotional effect of moving patterns on people, this high-tech surface shines green, orange or blue. Orange may make a person feel warmer, and blue or green may make them cooler. The Tefal Quick Cup (or T-Fal for those in North America and Japan) is another shot at improving the kettle by only heating as much water as is actually needed. You simply fill the reservoir with cold tap water and then any time you need hot water for coffee or tea you just push the red button and it will be automatically dispensed. The water is only heated as it travels from the reservoir to the spout and it only takes 3 seconds to bring the temperature to just below the boiling point using Tefal’s patented Opti-Quick system. And if you only need cold water just push the black button and you’ll get clean, filtered water from the spout instead.
Since the Quick Cup only heats the water as it’s being dispensed it dramatically cuts down on wasted energy. In fact Tefal claims the kettle can reduce energy consumption by 65% compared to a standard kettle. Not only is using less energy better for the environment but it’s also great for your monthly energy bill.
The Quick Cup will be released in early July (in Europe at least) and will retail for about $120. While it’s not cheap it’s probably one of those ‘better in the long run’ kind of things.

It may or may not surprise you to hear that jet packs (of a sort) are old news. Bell Aerosystems had a personal rocket belt back in the 1960s, and a few different companies are currently offering the same hydrogen peroxide powered sort of thing, including Tecaeromex, from whom you can buy a working version for $250,000. The downside of rocket belts is that they only get a maximum of 30 seconds flight time, and the fuel is expensive and dangerous. Bell Aerospace started working on an actual jet pack in the late 60s, which had a hypothetical flying time of 25 minutes and a top speed of about 80 mph, but dropped the project due to it’s complexity.

It includes custom 3D software for creating your own designs and even though it’s claimed to be user friendly I imagine there’s a bit of a learning curve depending on how complex you want those designs to be. And while it does require a PC the designs are transferred to the machine via memory cards so that your computer doesn’t have to be in the same sawdust filled room. Of course given the CompuCarve’s relatively compact size it can only handle materials up to 5 inches high and 14 1/2 inches long meaning you’re somewhat limited to only producing stuff like 3D signs and ornate wooden boxes.
The Craftsman CompuCarve is available from Sears for $1,899.

Like with water skiing you need to be towed by a boat but unlike water skiing the tow rope is connected directly to the Bikeboard apparently making it far easier for beginner riders to get going. It also has a set of handlebars that can be used for steering though I’m not entirely sure how that works unless there’s a small rudder on the underside I’m not seeing. If anything the Bikeboard Water at least looks far safer than other towed toys like say the Wego Kite Tube.
The Bikeboard Water is available directly fromSwissbikeboard for $958 and can also be ordered in other configurations for use on land or snow. I just figured the water version was more appropriate for the summer time.

At a recent trade show Whirlpool showed off cradles holding a portable Panasonic DVD player and a Philips LCD picture frame and apparently more electronics manufacturers have expressed interest in the concept. Ideally the centralpark feature will use a single standardized cradle and third-party manufacturers will produce devices specifically designed to fit the cradle and be used on a fridge.
Whirlpool hopes to have the centralpark Connection feature available on some of their fridge models sometime in 2008 with a starting price of about $899.

Since LCD and plasma displays have become more common having one hanging on your wall is less likely to impress your friends when they come over. But I guarantee these all glass ‘floating’ stands are sure to impress anyone and everyone who stops by. While glass shelving and displays are nothing new the Uranus and Cosmos models made by Schroers & Schroers have no visible metal pieces and look like they’re ready to shatter at any moment under the weight of the display.
The Uranus model (on the left) is designed to hold an LCD or plasma display up to 38 inches in size or about 30 kilograms in weight. On the bottom is a rotary base that can actually be swiveled thanks to a series of hardened steel balls that roll along a milled groove. The Cosmos (on the right) is the larger of the two and can accommodate screens up to 60 inches in size and includes an integrated shelf for holding up to 4 AV components. While they look really cool in the product shots I can’t help but wonder if they’ll look as cool once you’ve got all the wiring hooked up between devices.
You can expect to pay just over $3,000 for the Uranus stand while the Cosmos is actually available in 2 sizes depending on the size of your screen and runs between $5,900 and $6,600. Personally I think I’ll stick with my IKEA stuff for the time being.

I’m truly amazed at the type of things people can’t live without when they go camping. In fact these days camping seems more like an adventure in finding battery, solar or manual powered gadgets rather than a way of getting away from it all. Well adding to the list of hand-powered gadgets is the Vortex Blender for those who can’t survive a day or two in the wilderness without a smoothie or margarita.
